As part of cooperation between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Chad, Dr. Gerd Müller, Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) Minister led a large delegation on an official mission to Chad. On Wednesday 29 August 2018, the acting Executive Secretary, the Director of Administration and Finance (DAF) of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC), Nadjingar Titdjebaye, led the delegation to the water pumping station of the Chadian Water Company, in Farcha.
Although the trip was very short due to the very busy agenda of the Minister, it nevertheless made it possible to address the essential issues of cooperation between the BMZ and LCBC, particularly those related to water resources. However, the meeting focused essentially on water. During the question and answer session with the technical staff of the BGR project and LCBC experts, the Minister was very attentive and very interested about the rate of access by Chadian populations to drinking water, the depth of the ground water or the challenges related to water in the years to come in the Basin.
It is worth nothing that the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany supports LCBC through the Federal Institute of Geo-sciences and Natural Resources (BGR) as part of ground water-oriented research to better understand the hydrogeological functioning of aquifers in the basin and provide capacity building to LCBC experts. It is in this logic that the “Lake Chad Basin Commission Support” project assists LCBC in coordinating ground water data sharing and integrating them into a management system to develop sustainable water resources strategies among others.
