Sustainable Management of Water Resources in the Lake Chad Basin– Applied

Overview

This project, implemented by GIZ and commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), supports the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) in sustainably managing transboundary water resources. It builds on the achievements of the first phase (2019–2022) and continues through December 2025.

Objective

To strengthen LCBC’s capacity to advise member countries on environmentally friendly, climate-adapted, gender-sensitive, and conflict-reducing management of shared water resources in the Lake Chad Basin.

LCBC-Executed Components

Component: Institutional Strengthening & Technical Advisory Support to LCBC

Budget: €5 million (2023–2025)

Key Activities

Objective:

Enhance LCBC’s institutional capacity and technical expertise to manage transboundary
water resources effectively.

Organisational Advice to LCBC Executive Secretariat

  • Support implementation of a watershed management cycle.
  • Strengthen internal processes for strategic planning and coordination.

Lake Chad Information System (LIS)

  • Improve LIS functionality and data usage.
  • Train LCBC and member country staff in LIS utilization.

Partners’ Forum Development

  • Design and establish a multi-stakeholder forum as foreseen in the Water Charter.
  • Facilitate regional dialogue and cooperation.

Regional Technical Support

  • Document learning experiences from Waza-Logone intervention zone.
  • Support partner platforms in the Logone sub-basin to identify and address priority challenges.

Local Capacity Building

  • Train farmers, pastoralists, and fishers in good agricultural practices.
  • Build capacity for climate change adaptation and conflict mitigation.

Expected Results

· Harmonized legal and policy frameworks.
· Strengthened institutional & stakeholder capacity.
· Operational data systems for basin management.
· Validated ecosystem and livelihood interventions.
· Investment roadmap for SAP implementation.
