Regional Validation Workshop of the Lake Chad Basin Revised Strategic Action Programme
Abuja, 24-26 October 2022. The Federal Republic capital of Nigeria is hosting a three-day regional validation workshop on the Lake Chad Basin revised Strategic Action Programme (SAP).
In attendance are experts from Member States, LCBC and stakeholders in Water, Climate, and Environment, especially regarding the sustainable management of the Lake Chad. The workshop will discuss the structure, content, review, approve the long-term vision agreed upon, approve the Environmental Quality Objectives (EQOs) and associated activities. Participants will take ownership and subsequently validate the revised Strategic Action Programme and its Action Plan for the next 25 years.
The draft revised SAP was developed based on a participatory and inclusive approach, supported by continual data analysis and documentation shared with all stakeholders, with support of LCBC technical and financial partners. It is part of the project: “Improving the Management of the Lake Chad”, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Mamman NUHU, Executive Secretary of LCBC stated that “LCBC considers the SAP as its most strategic planning document. It supports the implementation of its mandate to ensure long-term sustainable development of the Basin and its environment for peace and regional integration. The need for consensus and solidarity in the adoption of this document, which takes into consideration the vision and long-term objectives of the Commission and its partners, cannot be overstated.”
When adopted, the revised SAP will serve as the most important execution tool of LCBC, to guide the identification and the implementation of concrete programmes and projects in the basin, aimed at addressing the various challenges, including environmental issues identified in the Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis (TDA). The SAP will contribute to the better sustainable development and management of the Lake Chad Basin region.
