Regional Project for the Conservation and Sustainable Development of Lake Chad

Overview

This regional project is implemented by the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) with support from UNDP and funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF). It aims to build climate resilience and reduce ecosystem stress in the Lake Chad Basin through the implementation of the Strategic Action Programme (SAP), benefiting Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria.

Objective

To achieve climate-resilient, integrated ecosystem-based management of the Lake Chad Basin through policy, legal, and institutional reforms, and investments that improve water quality and quantity, protect biodiversity, and sustain livelihoods.

LCBC-Executed Components

Policy and Legal Frameworks

Objective: Strengthen and harmonize sustainable legal and policy instruments across member states.

Key Activities:
· Support implementation of the Lake Chad Basin Water Charter.
· Promote conjunctive use management of surface and groundwater.
· Align national policies with regional SAP priorities.
Capacity Building and Awarenes

Objective: Enhance technical capacity and stakeholder engagement.

Key Activities:
· Train national ministries, institutions, academia, and civil society.
· Raise awareness on sustainable resource management.
Policy and Legal Frameworks

Objective: Strengthen and harmonize sustainable legal and policy instruments across member states.

Key Activities:
· Support implementation of the Lake Chad Basin Water Charter.
· Promote conjunctive use management of surface and groundwater.
· Align national policies with regional SAP priorities.
Ecosystem Management &Livelihoods

Objective: Demonstrate and scale sustainable practices.

Key Activities:
· Pilot ecosystem restoration and alternative livelihood projects. · Validate and upscale successful interventions.
Investment Programme Development

Objective: Identify and prepare future investments

Key Activities:
· Assess SAP stress reduction and livelihood activities. · Design broad investment programme for SAP implementation.

Expected Results

· Harmonized legal and policy frameworks.
· Strengthened institutional & stakeholder capacity.
· Operational data systems for basin management.
· Validated ecosystem and livelihood interventions.
· Investment roadmap for SAP implementation.
